The stuff of legends

Sitting at “Table 945” in the Foundation Room waiting for Toots & the Maytals to sing “5446,” I had a chance to reflect on the numerology of it all. The posh upstairs room at the House of Blues brought back memories of hanging in the sound booth in 1994 with founder Isaac Tigrett on the club’s opening night. Still can picture that sweet view of Aerosmith. Had the same view at Toots, whose performance brought out No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, star photographer Jeff Kravitz and “Like a Prayer” video icon Leon, who fronts a reggae-soul band, Leon & the Peoples. The actor-singer was studying the moves of reggae legend Toots, who proved to be equal parts James Brown, Prince and Morris Day.... Social Distortion kicked off a tour in Ventura on Thursday night. The elder statesman of O.C. punk, Mike Ness, hit the stage masked and unveiled his latest gem: an acoustic version of his hard-core song “Prison Bound,” softened with ragtime-era piano.

Change of landscape

Get ready for the latest from the Vintage Bar Group, which has revamped the Lava Lounge into a woodsy haven it is naming the Woods. The Woods is set to make its debut April 26.... Cat Club owner Slim Jim Phantom tells me his band, the Stray Cats, is doing its first U.S. tour in 15 years this summer with the Pretenders and ZZ Top....Syren, a weekly club night catering to the transgender community, has been drawing lively crowds on Saturdays to Tempest in West Hollywood.... DJ Stonerokk provided the aural pleasure at Tuesday’s Maxim-hosted party at Privilege in WeHo for German cover girl Ariane Sommer.... Such celebutantes as the Duff and Olsen sisters, along with Enrique Iglesias, Tommy Hilfiger and Kevin Connolly, made the scene at Les Deux Cafe on Friday.

Expecting the brass

So USC wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett has decided to turn pro. How does he celebrate? He throws a star-studded bash, complete with the USC marching band. Jarrett’s party was scheduled to go off Wednesday night at the Cabana Club.... Hosts Josh Richman and Hartwell also tossed the Sunday afternoon Beverly Hills mansion party for the Samsung “Upstage” music phone. Among those dialed in were Jimmy Kimmel, Paris Hilton, Josh Henderson and Reggie Bush, who got an earful of performers Twista and Gnarls Barkley.... Teddy’s at the Roosevelt Hotel was visited last week by the likes of Lindsay Lohan, James Blunt and Harry Morton.... And now that Sting and David Bowie have teamed up with Forty Deuce founder Ivan Kane to open a Forty Deuce in New York this fall, they’ll probably get VIP treatment.
