Security spread thin at libraries
Re “Checking out library safety,” April 26
That people are not safe at public libraries is old news. Librarians have been dealing with problem patrons for decades. We have no idea whether someone walking through our doors is mentally ill, on medication or illegal drugs, drunk or homeless. As a public agency, we are open to everyone.
Unfortunately, library budgets do not always allow for security officers at each branch from the time the library opens until it closes. I know that the Los Angeles Public Library’s security officers are spread thinly throughout the system. How many parents would allow a child to go to a shopping mall alone and unsupervised?
Safety issues in public libraries are an issue the city’s neighborhood councils may wish to look into.
