Road paved with fond memories

Your two articles on the magnificent Eastern Sierra were truly inspiring [“The Miracle Miles,” April 22]. Having traveled on U.S. 395 dozens of times in all seasons, I know that the drive never becomes long and tedious.

Your cover picture of the Alabama Hills was a great enticement to make the drive, and the color-shaded relief map and photos of the area from Bodie to Lone Pine give travelers an excellent picture of the varied and picturesque geographic terrain they will pass through.

Your article described many of the sites my husband and I have enjoyed throughout the years.

Omitted, however, was the not-to-be-missed Laws Railroad Museum near Bishop [(760) 873-5950].

The museum complex comprises the original 1883 Laws depot, which is full of memorabilia.

You failed to mention a wonderful inn called the Winnedumah Hotel in Independence.

I stayed there many times after a high school friend purchased it and renovated the hotel. Bing Crosby and many celebrities used to stay there.

My friend sold it a few years back.

Do you know if it still is open?
