Sizzling through a century

It’s entirely appropriate that the 100th anniversary of Benny Carter’s birth is generating one of the summer’s not-to-be-missed jazz programs. A trendsetter as an alto saxophonist, a trumpeter, a composer and an arranger, Carter -- who died in 2003 at 95 -- has had a profound effect on every aspect of the jazz arts.

In “Benny Carter’s 100 Years of Music” at the Hollywood Bowl, his big-band works will be celebrated by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

Expect saxophonists James Moody and Mel Martin, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, guitarist Russell Malone and Carter’s longtime rhythm section to revive memories of his small-ensemble work. Singers Roberta Gambarini and Marlena Shaw will interpret numbers from his song catalog. And pianists Gerald Clayton and Eldar will demonstrate Carter’s continuing significance to young jazz artists.
