Synthesis in Latin America

Share

Most exhibitions that feature art gleaned from colonial Latin America seek to emphasize the fact that the works were created in discrete countries rather than in a larger, more unified whole. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, however, presents “The Arts in Latin America, 1492-1820” in a different manner. It looks to explore the similarities and variances throughout the region in its display of art made in the Spanish viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru as well as those from the Portuguese colony of Brazil during the period between the “discovery” of the New World and the formation of independent nation-states. About 250 pieces are shown, including paintings, sculptures, gold and silver objects, and shell-inlaid furniture.
