The Senate confirmed Adm. Michael Mullen to serve as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

President Bush in June chose Mullen, 60, to replace Gen. Peter Pace as the nation’s top military officer amid the growing unpopularity of the Iraq war. The Joint Chiefs chairman serves a two-year term. Mullen had been chief of naval operations.
