An obscure, mostly Arab Darfur rebel group said it had kidnapped 12 Sudanese soldiers and challenged the government to stop mobilizing militias to counter the 4-year-old revolt in the western part of the country.

The Democratic Popular Front Army’s secretary-general, Osama Mohammed Hassan, said it was “the first time we have captured government soldiers.”

A Sudanese army spokesman dismissed the report as a lie.
