Maye Ryan, 97; nation’s oldest female Marine veteran, schoolteacher

Maye Ryan, 97, the oldest female Marine Corps veteran in the country, died Monday night in Owasso, Okla., the Tulsa World reported.
Ryan joined the first class of the newly established Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1943 and was assigned to a base in Mojave, Calif., where she served as a typist for 32 months, the World reported.
Discharged as a corporal, she eventually returned to Oklahoma with her husband and son, and resumed her career as a schoolteacher. She retired in 1967.
