President’s party wins big in vote

President Nursultan A. Nazarbayev’s party won 88% of the vote in a parliamentary election in which all other parties failed to reach a 7% hurdle for representation, early results announced by the Central Election Commission showed today. The vote was being closely watched for indications of whether the ex-Soviet state was committed to democracy and pluralism.
