Alan J. Austin, 21, of Houston; private, Army. Austin was killed Aug. 12 when his Humvee overturned while traveling in a convoy near Forward Operating Base Sharona in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, near the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Alicia A. Birchett, 29, of Mashpee, Mass.; staff sergeant, Army. Birchett died Aug. 9 in Baghdad of injuries suffered a day earlier when a truck’s brakes failed while she was changing a tire. She was assigned to the 887th Engineer Company, 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Jesse G. Clowers Jr., 27, of Herndon, Va.; staff sergeant, Army. Clowers was among three soldiers killed Aug. 12 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Eric D. Cottrell, 39, of Pittsview, Ala.; staff sergeant, Army. Cottrell was among three soldiers killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Qayyarah, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

Joan J. Duran, 24, of Roxbury, Mass.; staff sergeant, Army. Duran was killed Aug. 10 in a noncombat-related incident in Baqubah, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

William L. Edwards, 23, of Houston; private first class, Army. Edwards was killed by a sniper Aug. 11 in Arab Jabour, Iraq, southeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Sean P. Fisher, 29, of Santee, Calif.; staff sergeant, Army. Fisher was among five soldiers killed Tuesday when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during a post-maintenance test flight at Taqaddum air base near Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49 at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Jordan E. Goode, 21, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; private first class, Army. Goode was killed Aug. 11 when a roadside bomb exploded under his vehicle in Zormont, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Shawn D. Hensel, 20, of Logansport, Ind.; private first class, Army. Hensel was killed Tuesday when he apparently got caught in a crossfire during an insurgent attack on his unit in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Alun R. Howells, 20, of Parlin, Colo.; specialist, Army. Howells was killed in combat Monday in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Steven R. Jewell, 26, of Bridgeton, N.C.; specialist, Army. Jewell was among five soldiers killed Tuesday when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during a post-maintenance test flight at Taqaddum air base near Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49 at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Johnson was among five soldiers killed Tuesday when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during a post-maintenance test flight at Taqaddum air base near Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49 at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Willard M. Kerchief III, 21, of Evansville, Ind.; private first class, Army. Kerchief died Thursday in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Tarmiya, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Kitowski was among three soldiers killed Aug. 12 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 345th Psychological Operations Company, 2nd Psychological Operations Group, Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Robert R. Pirelli, 29, of Franklin, Mass.; staff sergeant, Army. Pirelli was killed Wednesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Iraq’s Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Stanley B. Reynolds, 37, of Rock, W.Va.; staff sergeant, Army. Reynolds was among five soldiers killed Tuesday when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during a post-maintenance test flight at Taqaddum air base near Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49 at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

William D. Scates, 31, of Oklahoma City; staff sergeant, Army. Scates was among four soldiers killed by an improvised bomb Aug. 11 when they were lured into a house rigged to explode while searching for a sniper who killed another soldier in Arab Jabour, Iraq, southeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Michael E. Tayaotao, 27, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Tayaotao, an explosive ordnance disposal technician, was killed in combat Aug. 9 in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
