A Zombie’s horror flick; big doings on ‘Big Love’

We wish we could talk about: Rob Zombie’s “Halloween.” We’re not capable of watching horror movies, which is too bad because we do find them fascinating -- “the collective nightmares of a society,” as Wes Craven once said. We’re not fans of movies based on movies in general, but Zombie seems like a pretty smart guy. We’re curious to hear what he does with his remake (“re-imagining!” says a friend) of the original film. Time to talk about: The season finale of “Big Love.” “Big Love” had some big shoes to fill this year with the demise of HBO’s most popular franchise, and it wasn’t getting any help from “Entourage,” which has been on a downward slide. (Meow!) But the creators of this show about a polygamous family stepped up their game. The second season, which ends tonight, has been intense, scary and dark, with a whole lot at stake. Way to go guys! (Tonight)

We can’t imagine why you’d talk about: “Balls of Fury.” This movie about a ping-pong championship features a lot of boldfaced names -- Christopher Walken, George Lopez, Maggie Q, Masi Oka and newish-comer Dan Fogler, who reminds us of Booger from “Revenge of the Nerds.” We saw the nonsensical trailer and it looks bad. You could talk about: The new Liars album. This band, fronted by Karen O’s Australian ex, got known around 2001-2002 as arty dance dudes from Brooklyn. Then they started getting really weird. Like super-duper weird. Some people really love the subsequent albums; we’re not among them, but we respect musicians who take risks. “Liars” is supposedly their most traditional album ever, but it’s still pretty different. We can’t decide if you should talk about: Dane Cook. Our inclination is not to like anything the comedian does, but then we started thinking, is that fair? We don’t even know that much about the guy, and he sure is getting a lot of work -- he’s got “Good Luck Chuck” with Jessica Alba coming out this fall and has just started filming “Bachelor No. 2” with Kate Hudson. This week you can join us in learning more about Cook when “Dane Cook: The Lost Pilots” comes out on DVD. (Tuesday)
