Other sources for chair caning

In your article on chair caning [“A Good Caning Can Change a Bad Chair,” Aug. 23], you omitted Cane and Basket Supply Co. in midcity L.A. [1283 S. Cochran Ave., (323) 939-9644, www.canebasket.com]. The owners are true experts at assessment and offer quality repairs.

I have had a valuable Victorian rocking chair recaned, and they did a beautiful job. I go in to buy basket supplies (which they sell also), and every time I am there, someone comes in with a wonderful old piece of furniture in need of recaning.

They have been in business since 1934 and are the largest cane repair shop and supplier west of the Mississippi. They also sell supplies for do-it-yourselfers.

Twice I have read articles in your Home section where I have had to chuckle to myself. The articles on caning a bad chair and upholstering old chairs [“Salvaged in Style,” June 7] made it sound as if no one does these things themselves.

I know many people who have done their own reupholstering, recaning and refinishing of chairs, sofas and other furniture. Torrance Adult Schools give lessons. I learned how to cane and upholster furniture at Hamilton Adult Education Center in Torrance. Several of the students, myself included, have almost completely furnished their homes this way.
