Lawmakers get 2.75% pay raise
On the day when a 2.75% pay raise kicked in for state legislators and other elected officials, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who doesn’t take a salary for his state job, suggested Monday it would be best if others did not accept increases, given the state’s budget woes.
Asked about the raises, the governor responded that “everyone should hold back and think twice” about accepting the pay increase.
Salaries for state legislators went up 2.75%, to $116,208, based on the action of a citizen commission that sets pay. The salaries for the state attorney general and superintendent of public instruction rose 5% after the commission concluded higher increases were needed to keep their salaries competitive.
