Plan could delay DWP rate hikes

Share

Just minutes after confirming David Nahai as the new general manager for the Department of Water and Power on Wednesday, two members of the City Council introduced a motion that, in effect, would postpone proposed rate increases for both water and power.

Council members Eric Garcetti and Jan Perry said they wanted to give Nahai time to better explain how the department would spend money from the increases. DWP officials have said they need the money to upgrade the power system, which is prone to summer blackouts, and expand the city’s ability to buy and produce green power.

Nahai said he was disappointed by the prospect of a delay in rate hikes -- 9% for power and 5.9% for water.
