ACLU settles suit against university
Chapman University and the American Civil Liberties Union have reached a settlement agreement allowing student groups not officially recognized by the school to congregate on campus, officials announced Thursday.
The groups will be able to distribute materials in designated areas and purchase ads in the student newspaper provided they prominently disclaim any university affiliation in all written or online documents.
The agreement stemmed from a protest lodged by the ACLU in October on behalf of an unofficial Jewish fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu, which had been ordered not to recruit or promote its events on campus.
