Airfares highest since mid-2006
U.S. airlines will end this year commanding the highest domestic fares since mid-2006, according to a fare-tracking website.
Competitors followed UAL Corp.’s United Airlines, which doubled the fuel surcharge on round-trip tickets last week to $20, marking the ninth broad-based fare increase since September, said Rick Seaney, chief executive of Dallas-based FareCompare.com.
AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, Continental Airlines Inc., Northwest Airlines Corp. and US Airways Group Inc. had at least partially matched the increase by Monday, spokesmen said. Delta Air Lines Inc. adopted the higher fee Friday, a day after United.
Prices for tickets on U.S. routes are now the highest since FareCompare.com began tracking them 3 1/2 years ago.
