Why His Grandkids Run Free in Avalon

I was shocked at your incorrect description of Avalon (“Pleasure Cruising in Avalon,” by Jessica Gelt, A Day In, Jan. 7). Rowdy? Comparable to Tijuana? We have gone to Avalon with our grandchildren every summer for 14 years. It remains the only place our grandchildren can go on their own and be safe. In the morning they go to Sally’s Waffle Shop on their own. They go to the funky miniature golf course on their own. They go to the arcade on their own. At lunch they go to Eric’s on the Pier on their own. They cannot do this when they go to Maui, Disney World or Disneyland with their parents.

Avalon has a quality of life that has barely changed since I went there with my parents in the 1940s and ‘50s. I would never let my grandchildren (ages 9 to 17) on their own in another setting. I showed them your article, and they were at a loss for words. They love Avalon like no other place they have been to, and that encompasses a lot of places. We are going again in July.
