Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said his plan for universal healthcare would require higher taxes and cost up to $120 billion a year.

“The bottom line is we’re asking everybody to share in the responsibility of making healthcare work in this country,” his party’s 2004 vice presidential nominee said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “Yes, we’ll have to raise taxes.”

Edwards said his plan would aim to provide coverage for the 47 million people who lack it and reduce the cost of coverage for middle-class families.
