United Airlines parent UAL Corp. has reached a tentative agreement with its pilots’ union that gives the carrier staffing flexibility and the pilots better working conditions.

In a message to its members on its website, the union said the contract changes, if approved by its 7,000 active pilots, would raise the minimum number of hours they must fly a month and lower the maximum.

The union has demanded that the airline renegotiate contract terms as UAL posted consecutive quarterly profits after emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings Feb. 1.
