Ian Wallace, 60; drummer played with Dylan, Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks

Ian Wallace, 60, a drummer who toured with Bob Dylan, Don Henley and Bonnie Raitt and recorded with Stevie Nicks, Ry Cooder and other stars, died Thursday at UCLA Medical Center of complications from esophageal cancer, said his wife, Marjorie Pomeroy.

Born in Bury, England, Wallace began playing in King Crimson and other rock bands in the 1960s and earned a reputation for his eclectic range.

Wallace went on to provide beats for prominent musicians in a variety of genres. They included Crosby, Stills & Nash, Nicks, Roy Orbison, the Traveling Wilburys, Brian Eno and Jackson Browne.

He moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s, telling a Times reporter in 1980, “When you’ve grown up somewhere as cold and miserable as England, and you’re used to having to replace your wallpaper every year because the damp comes right through the walls and ruins it, it’s hard not to love a place where the sun is usually shining and you can go out at night in January without a coat.”
