Bombings blamed on opposition

From Times Wire Reports

The military-backed government suggested that supporters of ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra were responsible for a string of deadly New Year’s Eve blasts that killed at least three people and wounded 38 in Bangkok, the capital.

The bombings capped a year of unrest, including a coup in September that ousted Thaksin and an increasingly violent Muslim insurgency in the south.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the blasts. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont virtually ruled out any role by Islamic insurgents, saying the attacks probably were “related to people who lost their political benefits.”

But the government has named no suspects and presented no proof.
