“The Queen” and “Venus” are drama contenders. “Cars” leads in animation. “Apocalypto” lands among foreign films. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” earns Johnny Depp another comedy nod. ABC looks strong with “Ugly Betty,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives.”

“Babel” leads the charge. “Dreamgirls” proves voters still adore musicals. “Flags of Our Fathers” was saluted for direction.

Sony Pictures Classics

Acting bids for “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Running With Scissors” and “Stranger Than Fiction.” Music notice for “The Da Vinci Code.” “Monster House” puts new animation shingle on the map. Classics has two in foreign films: “Volver” and “The Lives of Others.”

20th Century Fox/ Fox Searchlight

Big Fox’s “Borat” competes against Searchlight’s “Little Miss Sunshine” for best comedy. Both are up for acting kudos with “The Devil Wears Prada,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “Thank You for Smoking” and “Notes on a Scandal.” Past Globe TV champs “24” and “House” may prevail again and FX’s canceled “Thief” looks for some recognition.

USA Network

Universal got shut out, but indie house Focus got an acting nod for “Hollywoodland.” Peacock network has many shows in the running: “Heroes,” “The Office,” “30 Rock,” “Scrubs,” “Medium” and “My Name Is Earl.” USA’s “Monk” is still strong.

New Line Picturehouse HBO / TNT

Many internal conflicts: Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Departed” versus DiCaprio in “Blood Diamond.” “Departed” takes on “Little Children” for best drama and “Letters From Iwo Jima” for best director, while “Letters” battles Picturehouse’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” for best foreign film. “The Fountain” versus “The Painted Veil” for best score. “Happy Feet” could nab the new animation trophy. HBO has “Big Love,” “The Sopranos,” “Entourage,” “Elizabeth I” and “Mrs. Harris.” TNT has “The Closer.”
