Preserve access to Point Fermin

Share

Re “Cliffs are alluring and deadly,” Jan. 9

In the discussions of Point Fermin, it is important to note its significance to the geology of Southern California. Point Fermin is a classic example of a type of landsliding called a “slump.” Each year, geologists lead field trips to view the landscape at Point Fermin, where we can easily illustrate and identify the slump blocks and back-rotation of the slopes and explain the underlying causes of slope instability. It is often the high point of our trips for its dramatic views of the fallen road, still-intact trees and slopes being undercut by the ocean. The death of USC kicker Mario Danelo at Point Fermin is tragic, but please remember the importance of this area for geologists and work to preserve safe access.
