Planning can cut global warming
Re “Next Schwarzenegger target: fuel emissions,” Jan. 9
I’m glad to see that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is serious about cutting vehicle emissions. But the most important way to fight global warming is by reducing how much we drive. The best way to make it easy for people to drive less is to create walkable neighborhoods and cities with shops, restaurants, parks, a range of housing options and, most important, fast and convenient public transportation and high-speed rail. The resulting communities wouldn’t just fight global warming, they would improve our quality of life.
I hope the governor can make this connection and recognize that ethanol and hybrids won’t save us.
