Beckham’s price

Re “A pair of stars, an L.A. sky, a happy Galaxy,” Jan. 12
The L.A. team that is paying David Beckham $50 million a year for five years must have more money than sense. Here is a footballer who is 31 years old and on a terminal decline in his career -- to him it must be the best pension plan in the world. I am sure his teammates will feel underpaid by comparison.
Football [soccer] will never be the No. 1 game in the U.S.
Pele, Franz Beckenbauer (who were better than Beckham) and the 1994 World Cup still didn’t make it big, so what chance has a superannuated footballer?
