Mancuso, Kildow take top spots

Julia Mancuso and Lindsey Kildow won the top two places in a World Cup super-combined Sunday at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, and Resi Stiegler just missed making it an American sweep.

Mancuso had a combined time of 2 minutes 9.16 seconds to edge Kildow by 0.06 of a second. They had the best times in the morning downhill portion of the event and held onto their places in the afternoon slalom run.

Slalom specialist Marlies Schild of Austria was third and Stiegler was fourth in 2:21.09 -- a fifth of a second behind Schild for the third spot on the podium.

Mancuso led Kildow by 0.88 of a second after the downhill portion.

Austria’s Mario Matt won a World Cup super-combined in deteriorating conditions at Wengen, Switzerland, rallying in the slalom after posting only the 34th-best time in a downhill run.

Bode Miller was second fastest in the downhill portion of the event but straddled a gate early in the slalom after getting caught in the deep ruts on a course mangled by rain and warm weather.

Matt was the first skier down the slalom course, an advantage since the Jungfrau course got chewed up by each competitor. He finished the event in a combined time of 2 minutes 27.87 seconds to collect his first World Cup victory in almost two years.

Marc Berthod was second in 2:28.25. His Swiss teammate, Silvan Zurbriggen, was third in 2:28.28.

Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States and Xavier Delerue of France won gold in the snowboardcross event at the Snowboarding World Championships at Arosa, Switzerland.

Americans Seth Wescott won silver and Nate Holland placed third in the men’s event.

Hannu Manninen, Anssi Koivuranta, Jaakko Tallus and Ville Kaehkoenen led Finland to victory in a Nordic combined World Cup team sprint event at Val di Fiemme, Italy.... A World Cup ski jump event in Vikersund, Norway, was canceled because of strong winds.

Stewart wins another supercross event

Kawasaki’s James Stewart won his second straight Amp’d Mobile World supercross GP race Saturday night in front of 44,953 fans at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael was second and Yamaha’s Chad Reed third. Stewart and Carmichael battled for the lead the first six laps, before Stewart went ahead for good in the seventh and got his 13th career AMA Supercross victory.

Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel got his first victory in the Amp’d Mobile Supercross Lites main event.

Giniel de Villiers of South Africa won the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally at Tichit, Mauritania, and maintained his overall lead. He finished the 366-mile trek across the desert from Atar to Tichit in 7 hours 31 minutes 52 seconds.

He was 6:35 ahead of French driver Stephane Peterhansel and 9:11 in front of defending champion Luc Alphand.

The eighth is the longest of the rally and considered the most difficult.

Tour may ban implicated cyclists without evidence

A warning from the Tour de France: Cyclists -- even such top riders as Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso -- could be expelled from this year’s race without evidence from the Spanish doping investigation.

Race director Christian Prudhomme said the investigation, in which 56 riders allegedly received performance-enhancing drugs at a Madrid clinic, probably won’t conclude by the July 7 start of this year’s tour.

“We reserve the right to take away riders’ invitations -- their names won’t mean a thing,” Prudhomme said. “We are prepared if riders that are not permitted to race want to take legal action.”

First baseman Lyle Overbay agreed to a $24-million, four-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, a team official said.

Overbay avoided arbitration with the deal.

Ryan Hall ran the Aramco Houston Half Marathon in 59 minutes 43 seconds to become the first American to break an hour in the half-marathon distance on a record standard course. The 24-year-old runner from Big Bear Lake beat the previous U.S. record, set by Mark Curp in 1985, by 1:12.

Moorpark High junior running back Darrell Scott, the state rushing leader last season, has told school officials he intends to transfer, according to Moorpark Athletic Director Rob Dearborn. Scott rushed for 3,194 yards and scored 46 touchdowns for Moorpark, which will be graduating its starting offensive line. Dearborn said that Scott indicated Ventura St. Bonaventure was a possible destination. St. Bonaventure Coach Jon Mack said no one has contacted the school about a transfer by Scott.

Clemson’s Reggie Merriweather scored on a one-yard run with 44 seconds left, and Tigers teammate Will Proctor completed a two-point conversion pass to Tennessee’s Bret Smith to help the Aina beat the Kai, 18-10, in the Hula Bowl at Honolulu. Alabama cornerback Ramzee Robinson then intercepted Boise State quarterback Jared Zabransky’s pass and returned it for a touchdown with 10 seconds left, giving the Aina team 15 points in 34 seconds.
