Fullerton handles UC Irvine

Cal State Fullerton used a stretch of pinpoint three-point shooting in the second half and pulled away from UC Irvine for a 75-60 Big West Conference victory Saturday night at Fullerton.

Junior forward Scott Cutley had 18 points and nine rebounds and junior guard Frank Robinson had 18 points for the Titans (16-4, 6-2), who defeated the Anteaters (10-12, 4-4) for the second time in seven days, maintained their percentage-points lead in the conference and won their 15th consecutive home game.

It is Fullerton’s first season sweep over the Anteaters since 1998-99 and matches the 1982-83 Titans team for the best 20-game record in school history.

With 16 minutes remaining, Fullerton’s lead was only four points, but the Titans made five of five three-point shots during a 17-6 run over the next 3:15 to take a 62-48 lead.

Irvine got to within nine, but a 9-1 Fullerton run, punctuated by a pair of crowd-pleasing dunks by Robinson, gave the Titans a 71-54 lead and control of the game with 6:20 to play.

UC Santa Barbara 70, Pacific 62 -- Alex Harris scored 27 points and the visiting Gauchos made eight of 10 free throws in the final 39 seconds to beat the Tigers for the first time since 2003. UC Santa Barbara (13-6, 5-2 Big West) led by 20 points three separate times in the second half, but Pacific (7-12, 3-3) cut the lead to 62-59 with 43 seconds remaining.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 79, Cal State Northridge 68 -- Trae Clark scored 19 points to lead the visiting Mustangs (10-9, 3-4 Big West), who scored 30 points (10 for 25) on three-pointers. Northridge (10-10, 3-4) scored 18 points (six for 20) from three-point attempts.

Loyola Marymount 74, Santa Clara 71 -- The Lions (9-13, 1-5 West Coast Conference) upset the Broncos (14-7, 4-2) at Santa Clara to end an eight-game losing streak. It’s also their first road win since Nov. 29. The Broncos’ Joey Kaempf missed a three-point shot with eight seconds left and Max Craig got the rebound for Loyola and was fouled with 6.9 seconds left. He made one of two free throws.

Pepperdine 68, St. Mary’s 66 -- Kingsley Costain scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half and the visiting Waves (6-16, 2-4 WCC) withstood a late charge. Diamon Simpson missed a tip-in at the buzzer for the Gaels (12-10, 4-2) after a missed shot by John Winston in the waning seconds.

UC Riverside 70, UC Davis 50 -- The win at Riverside ended a 15-game losing streak, and the Highlanders (4-17) avoided tying the school record for consecutive losses set in their first season in 1954-55.

After leading, 32-26, at halftime, the Highlanders used a 12-4 run early in the second half to pull away from the Aggies (4-15) and lead, 48-32.

The Highlanders’ last win came on Nov. 18 against Hope International.
