* at Boston 4, Tampa Bay 1: Daisuke Matsuzaka (10-5) struck out nine in eight shutout innings to hand the Devil Rays their ninth straight loss. Carlos Pena hit his 19th homer in the ninth off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon.

* at Kansas City 17, Seattle 3: Billy Butler homered, doubled and drove in six runs as the Royals handed John McLaren his second loss in two games as the Mariners’ manager.

* Cleveland 5, at Detroit 4 (11 innings): Casey Blake homered in the 11th inning to give the Indians their sixth straight win. The Tigers had the bases loaded in the 10th but Carlos Guillen popped out and Ivan Rodriguez grounded out.

* at New York 8, Minnesota 0: Chien-Ming Wang (8-4) won his fifth straight decision and Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer for the Yankees. Edwar Ramirez finished it by striking out all three batters in the ninth in his big league debut.

* at Chicago 5, Baltimore 1: Javier Vazquez (5-5) threw his 21st career complete game and Jim Thome hit a three-run homer for the White Sox, who won for the seventh time in their last nine games.

* at Oakland 3, Toronto 1: Joe Blanton (8-4) threw a four-hitter for his AL-leading third complete game to help the A’s win for the third time in four games.

* at Texas 8, Angels 3: The Rangers’ Kevin Millwood (5-7) went eight innings for his longest outing of the season.
