Avril Lavigne has denied a claim by a 1970s rock band that her hit “Girlfriend” rips off one of its tunes.

Responding to a lawsuit filed last week by songwriters Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer in which they allege that Lavigne and her co-writers lifted the Rubinoos’ 1979 song, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,” Lavigne and her manager said there was no basis for the allegation.

“I had never heard this song in my life,” the 22-year-old pop singer said.
