* at Boston 9, Toronto 4: David Ortiz hit his first home run at Fenway Park since April, and Eric Hinske and Jason Varitek also homered for the Red Sox to help Daisuke Matsuzaka overcome a rough outing and beat the Blue Jays. Matsuzaka gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings. He has given up 10 runs in his last two starts after yielding a total of six runs in his six previous starts.

* Kansas City 6, at Cleveland 5: The Royals built an early 5-0 lead against ace C.C. Sabathia but needed strong work from their bullpen to secure the victory. Zack Greinke, Jimmy Gobble, Joakim Soria and Octavio Dotel combined to hold the Indians to one run over the last four innings. Sabathia, who yielded six runs and 11 hits in seven innings, had a 12-6 record against Kansas City.

* at Baltimore 7, Chicago 6 (10 innings): Nick Markakis singled home the winning run with two out in the 10th inning, capping a late comeback. The Orioles faced a 5-1 deficit in the sixth, and trailed, 6-4, in the ninth before taking their only lead in the 10th.

* New York 6, at Tampa Bay 4: Bobby Abreu homered and drove in a season-high five runs, helping Chien-Ming Wang overcome a shaky first inning to win his seventh consecutive decision. Wang (10-4) yielded seven hits and three runs in six innings to improve to 9-1 over his last 12 starts.

* at Minnesota 4, Oakland 3: The A’s, who started the night 10 1/2 games back in the West, have lost a season-high six in a row and fell a season-worst three games under .500.

* at Seattle 6, Detroit 4: Kenji Johjima hit a game-breaking grand slam against Kenny Rogers.

* at Angels 9, Texas 5: The Angels beat the Rangers at home for the 19th time in 23 games.
