Michael Corvino, 46, president of the backpack maker JanSport, was killed Saturday when he lost control of his vintage 1970 Dodge Charger and crashed into a tree near his home in Danville, Calif., according to the California Highway Patrol.

JanSport, a subsidiary of Greensboro, N.C.-based VF Corp., is best known for the ubiquitous daypacks that have become staples at schools and universities throughout the country. The company, whose brands also include The North Face, Nautica and Lee jeans, was founded 40 years ago.

After beginning his career with VF 15 years ago, Corvino worked in sales and merchandising jobs in Tennessee and Florida before coming to California in late 2004 to become JanSport’s president.
