Juniper Networks swings to profit

Network-equipment maker Juniper Networks Inc. posted a quarterly profit Wednesday, contrasted with a loss a year earlier, as telecommunications companies bought more equipment to handle growing Internet traffic.

Second-quarter net income totaled $86.2 million, or 15 cents a share, in contrast to a loss of $1.2 billion, or $2.13 a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 17% to $664.9 million.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Juniper has benefited from increased Internet traffic, including online video entertainment. Its chief competitor is the much larger Cisco Systems Inc.
