Even when he’s not policing ‘Eureka,’ this star has his hands full

COLIN FERGUSON calls L.A. home these days, but he’s a bona-fide man of the world. The Montreal-born, Hong Kong-raised actor is a citizen of Canada, the U.S. and Britain, and has traveled extensively in South America, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Yet for his Sci Fi Channel fans, Ferguson belongs to the strange little burg of “Eureka,” where he is Sheriff Jack Carter, just back for a new season Tuesday nights at 9.

Beach time

On a special Friday I’ll drive down to where the 105 kind of T-bones into the ocean and spend a nice afternoon and evening at Dockweiler. It’s the beach just north of Manhattan, and no one goes there for some reason. Maybe it’s because there’s an oil refinery right next door. I kind of stumbled onto it; I was looking for a place to wait out the traffic after dropping friends off at the airport.

But you can set up a nice big fire there and not worry about the crowds. It’s probably not the safest place in the world, but I like it. I’ll pull up with a bunch of friends in my orange 1974 Volkswagen camper van, and I’ve got everything I possibly need packed inside -- a stocked fridge, Frisbees, whiffle bats, volleyballs. On the way home, we might swing by one of my favorite places to hear live music, the Hotel Cafe on Cahuenga.

Reward: a view

On Saturday morning there’s a great hike I like up off of Yerba Buena Road near Malibu. It’s at least seven miles, but there’s a great view at the top, and along the way there are some shaded areas with water that are really nice. You go with a bunch of friends and have a terrific time.

Afterward, we’d stop at Malibu Seafood out on PCH. You order your fresh catch and eat it on the redwood tables outside. It’s very low-key and easy. Then we’d just go down to Zuma for a while, but it wouldn’t be about running around and playing volleyball this time. After the long hike, this beach trip would be more about just lying around and recuperating.

In the evening, one of my friends with a nice house in the Hollywood Hills will have a bunch of people over for game night. Maybe either Risk, Celebrities or Running Charades, whatever anyone wants to do. Everyone’s eating and drinking a little, and the night can get a little silly. But very fun.

Iron, cheese and wine

On Sunday morning I’ll get up and go to a little gym in Silver Lake called Body Builders. I’ve been going there for 10 years. Then I’ll stay in the neighborhood and head for the CheeseStore of Silverlake, a great, great place where they give you samples.

I’ll go to a wine tasting at Silver Lake Wine on Glendale, where they have tastings several times a week including Sundays, and they charge only something like 12 bucks for a flight of wines, which is just fabulous. A really friendly place, and they know what I like. I’ll also stop by Yuca’s for lunch -- a double cheeseburger or a carne asada burrito.

And then in the late afternoon, we’ll wrap up the weekend by playing road hockey for a couple of hours at a church parking lot. My brother and I have all the gear, and we’ll play Canadians versus Americans, people who know each other versus those who don’t -- it can get stupidly competitive. But very fun.
