The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Shawn G. Adams, 21, of Dixon, Calif.; sergeant, Army. Adams was killed July 22 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Owaset, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Rhett A. Butler, 22, of Fort Worth; corporal, Army. Butler was killed July 20 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Khan Bani Saad, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Zachary R. Clouser, 19, of Dover, Pa.; specialist, Army. Clouser was among four soldiers killed July 18 when their vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Adhamiya, Iraq, east of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Michael S. Curry Jr., 37, of Dania Beach, Fla.; first sergeant, Army. Curry was among four soldiers killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Afghanistan’s Sarobi district, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy.

Davis was among four soldiers killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Afghanistan’s Sarobi district, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy.

Zachary R. Endsley, 21, of Spring, Texas; private first class, Army. Endsley was killed Monday when his unit was attacked with indirect fire -- a military term that usually refers to mortar or rocket fire -- in Afghanistan’s Arghandab district, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment in Hohenfels, Germany.

Courtney D. Finch, 27, of Leavenworth, Kan.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Finch died of noncombat-related injuries Tuesday in Qayyarah, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 714th Maintenance Company in Topeka, Kan.

Richard Gilmore III, 22, of Jasper, Ala.; specialist, Army. Gilmore was among four soldiers killed July 18 when their vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Adhamiya, Iraq, east of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Gomez was among four soldiers killed July 18 when their vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Adhamiya, Iraq, east of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Gutierrez-Rosales was among four soldiers killed July 18 when their vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire in Adhamiya, Iraq, east of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy.

Robert A. Lynch, 20, of Louisville, Ky.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Lynch was among three Marines killed Tuesday during combat operations against a Sunni insurgent stronghold in Iraq’s Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Joshua P. Mattero, 29, of San Diego; staff sergeant, Army. Mattero was killed Tuesday while trying to defuse an improvised explosive device in Baqubah, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 749th Ordnance Company, 63rd Explosive Ordnance Battalion at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

James H. McRae, 22, of Springtown, Texas; corporal, Marine Corps. McRae was among three Marines killed Tuesday during combat operations against a Sunni insurgent stronghold in Iraq’s Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Daniel S. Noble, 21, of Whittier; hospitalman, Navy. Noble was killed Tuesday during security operations in Iraq’s Dilaya province, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force Pacific at Camp Pendleton.

Juan S. Restrepo, 20, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; private first class, Army. Restrepo was killed July 22 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, east of Kabul. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy.

Christopher G. Scherer, 21, of East Northport, N.Y.; corporal, Marine Corps. Scherer was killed in combat July 21 in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Jacob S. Schmuecker, 27, of Atkinson, Neb.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Schmuecker was killed July 21 when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 755th Recon and Decontamination Company in O’Neill, Neb.

Bobby L. Twitty, 20, of Bedias, Texas; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Twitty was killed July 22 in a noncombat-related vehicle accident in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 6, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Matthew R. Zindars, 21, of Watertown, Wis.; corporal, Marine Corps. Zindars was among three Marines killed Tuesday during combat operations against a Sunni insurgent stronghold in Iraq’s Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
