Dell to stop making TVs, sources say

Dell Inc., after dropping “computer” from its name in 2003 to expand into consumer electronics, will stop making televisions and focus on personal computers, people familiar with the decision said.
Dell will quit producing liquid crystal display TVs under its own brand this month, according to four people who asked not to be named because of confidentiality agreements. The Round Rock, Texas-based company will continue to sell TVs from other manufacturers, including Sony Corp.
The company started sales of Dell-branded TVs in November 2003, eight months before Michael Dell handed his chief executive job to Kevin Rollins. In August 2005, Rollins said he wanted Dell’s TV business to match its 19% share of the PC market, the biggest at that time.
