Step up when you’re passed over

For two years in a row, I have been passed over for a promotion. My supervisor won’t tell me why. When I asked him why I lost out the last time, he said, “Keep up the good work; we need you.” I would prefer to stay in my position, but the latest snub is so demoralizing that I am thinking of leaving.

Career coach Kate Wendleton recommends that you become more assertive about what you want.

“You need to state your case to your boss and find out very clearly why you are not getting promoted and what you have to do to get that promotion,” she said.

She suggests that you take notes when you talk with your boss to show you are serious about implementing any suggestions, and that you tell your boss about your accomplishments and why you merit a promotion.
