Seeking the future of entertainment

Share

While the rest of the world watches TV, reads and otherwise entertains itself in good old-fashioned ways, a select few constantly search for the fabled “next level.” New York City-based curatorial group Tomorrow Unlimited has gathered players from the bleeding edges of film, technology and environmentalism to share their work and insights in the weekend exhibition and panel discussion “The Creators Series.”

Fresh from its premiere in New York last weekend, the curators have developed an interactive, multimedia exhibit of diverse works. Guests can watch samples from a “participatory cinema” project, or they can rifle through the online universes of social interface designer Jonathan Harris. Panel topics include websites that seek to measure cumulative human emotions throughout the world, as well as temporary “graffiti” installations using LEDs and lasers.

For director of programming Jeremy Boxer, the series’ overarching theme is “renew.” “We were looking for people who were renewing whatever kind of field that they were working in, who were looking at it in a different way.”

The new ideas will be in a free exhibit at Echo Park’s Rec Center and elaborated upon by their creators in paid panel discussions. Members of Graffiti Research Labs, whose guerrilla application of technology inspired the Boston “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” terrorism scare, will speak on the nature of “geek graffiti.” Other panelists will talk about how to make environmental sustainability more than a marketing buzzword. And musical performances by No Age and Pop Levi and a multimedia magic show by performance artist Nieto will accompany the words.
