NBC’s Brown reportedly going to CNN

Share

Campbell Brown is expected to leave NBC to anchor an hourlong news program for CNN after her contract expires at the end of July, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Brown, who co-anchors the weekend edition of “Today” and regularly substitutes for Brian Williams on “NBC Nightly News,” has been with NBC since 1998. Since last year, when she was passed over to replace Katie Couric on the weekday morning show, the industry has buzzed with speculation about which network would successfully woo her away.

Under Brown’s current contract, she is not able to formally negotiate any new deals for another two weeks, sources said, but she has had preliminary discussions with CNN about replacing Paula Zahn as anchor of the 5 p.m. newscast, which is frequently beaten by MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann.

A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment. NBC also had no comment, except to confirm that Brown is under contract through July.
