Vigilance over salaried workers

Share
From Newsday

I am a salaried employee. Recently, the owner of the company, who expects his salaried employees to work 45 hours a week, installed a finger-scanning machine to track the comings and goings of all employees, not just the hourly ones. All employees must scan their fingers before and after work. That makes sense for the hourly workers, who get overtime. But if salaried workers have to scan in, shouldn’t they be entitled to overtime too?

Having to clock or scan in doesn’t determine whether you should be paid for overtime. That is defined by your duties and your salary. So the company can require all employees to keep track of their time. But your employer can’t use that requirement to dock exempt employees’ pay when they miss part of a day. That’s illegal.
