Fury over the outdoor sound

Share

JEFF SPURRIER’s article “A New Vibe in Soundscaping” [June 21] alarms me. Talk about noise pollution! Aside from the fact that there is a law in Los Angeles prohibiting amplified sound in a residential area, who would want to live next to someone who regularly has their backyard filling with their choice in music? Other than the occasional party, no one wants to listen to someone else’s music echoing from their house, much less from their yard.

It is simply a matter of common consideration for others!

INEVITABLY there are some people who want to show off their new, expensive sound system by cranking up the sound. High frequencies disperse more easily, but subwoofers -- that’s a whole different situation.

Boosted bass, especially below 100 cycles, creates powerful sound waves that travel right through walls, fences and even dirt. Some neighbors might not only hear but actually feel the vibes.

WHY would you promote garden sound systems? As a Hollywood hills resident, I have to endure neighbors’ music at all hours. With the Hollywood Bowl effect, garden music from half a block away sounds like it is just outside my windows.

Even in the flatlands, imagine the cacophony if every house on the block had an outdoor sound system.

Considerate people do not play music outdoors.
