BON JOVI’S “Lost Highway” took the fast lane to the top of the national album chart in its first week in stores, selling 292,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures released Wednesday. “Highway,” the 10th studio effort from New Jersey’s most elite light-rock quartet, followed along a familiar route for the group, becoming Bon Jovi’s third No. 1 album since 1987.

It beat rock duo the White Stripes’ critically hailed “Icky Thump,” which sold 223,000 copies, and outpaced another vehicular-themed collection, country singer Brad Paisley’s “5th Gear” (which moved 197,000 copies, boosted by his hit single “Ticks”) for the top spot.

Last week’s No. 1 country singer-songwriter, Toby Keith, lost his top-dog status, with “Big Dog Daddy” slipping to No. 4.

And in a week that also saw Paul McCartney’s Starbucks-distributed “Memory Almost Full” fall two spots to No. 5, the potty-mouthed, beehived British soul diva Amy Winehouse ascended three chart positions, to No. 7, with her British smash “Back to Black” (62,000 copies).

Next week’s race to No. 1 appears to be shaping up as a tight contest between Kelly Clarkson’s much-debated third album, “My December,” and “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus.”
