Don’t-miss acts

on the main stage

Bad Religion

www.badreligion.com

* Album: “New Maps of Hell” (Epitaph, July 10)

* The skinny: In the band’s 27th year, Greg Graffin, Bret Gurewitz and gang are older than most of the fans they’ll be playing for. But on its 14th album (quite possibly its best in several years), the quintet dips into its wellspring of menacing guitars and meaningful lyrics to show the kids how it’s done.

The Briggs

www.thebriggs.org

* Album: “Back to Higher Ground” (Sideonedummy, 2006)

* The skinny: Proto-punk rendered by four young Eagle Rockers. The quartet’s shout-along anthems crackle with old-school agitation, and their very presence genuinely projects the genre’s DIY ethic.

Circa Survive

www.circasurvive.com

* Album: “On Letting Go” (Equal Vision, May 29)

* The skinny: The only band on this year’s Warped Tour and Coachella, Circa Survive makes aerated post-hard-core that hinges on the charisma of singer Anthony Green, the ex-Saosin vocalist. You buy into him, and the rest of the Philadelphia quintet is part of the package.

Tiger Army

www.tigerarmy.com

* Album: “Music From Regions Beyond” (Hellcat, June 5)

* The skinny: The Bay Area trio has outgrown its psychobilly roots, crafted a fourth album of breakneck rock and spawned legions of fans sporting its “TigerBat” logo.

* Download: “Afterworld” at epitaph.com/artists/album/517

Yellowcard

www.yellowcardrock.com

* Album: “Paper Walls” (Capitol, July 17)

* The skinny: The Florida expats who brought their violin-spiked pop-punk west seven years ago keep churning it out. Their forthcoming album feels almost like a singles collection, with singer Ryan Key’s adenoidal yearnings perfect for sorting out youth’s highs and lows.

Circle Jerks

With new material in the works, the L.A. legends loose their guitars on the next generation.

Coheed and Cambria

www.coheedandcambria.com

The New York prog-rockers’ new album, “No World for Tomorrow,” will be out in the fall; the short sets at Warped really don’t do this quartet justice.

Funeral for a Friend

www.ffaf.co.uk

The unfortunately named Welsh quintet in May released “Tales Don’t Tell Themselves,” a collection of cinematic anthems that sometimes find the mark in sweeping choruses. Brit-emo?

Paramore

Tennessee pop-punkers move up to the big stage after paying their dues in the last two years.

Pennywise

Reliable South Bay punks always deliver; besides, frontman Jim Lindberg has just published a book, “Punk Rock Dad.”

The Used

www.theused.net

On its latest, “Lies for the Liars” (released in May), the trio sounds tired, engaging in a healthy bit of recycling. But Bert McCracken and crew have plenty of hits.

And then there are ...

Chiodos (www.chiodos.net): Michigan-bred emo.

Cute Is What We Aim For (www.cuteiswhatweaimfor.com): Buffalo, N.Y.-bred emo.

Killswitch Engage (www.killswitchengage.com): Metal from Massachusetts notable largely for its overblown harmonics.

New Found Glory (www.newfoundglory.com): Florida-bred pop-punks, no longer on Geffen, return to their former label, Drive-Thru.

Pepper (www.pepperlive.com): Fairly well-worn reggae rock.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (www.redjumpsuit.com): With Cartel (not on Warped), this makes two too many pop-punk bands from Florida.

The Vincent Black Shadow (www.myspace.com/tvbs): A cabaret-ish pop-punk act that may not have hit its stride yet.

Side-stage notables

The Almost (www.thealmostmusic.com): Crunchy guitars and furious rhythms mark this side project of Underoath drummer Aaron Gillespie. (Hurley.com Stage)

Bleed the Dream (www.bleedthedream.com): Big, dark and restless rock from former purveyors of screamo. (Ernie Ball Stage)

Gallows (www.myspace.com/gallows): With their sweaty, shouted rants, these U.K. punks fail beautifully at anger management. (Hurley Stage)

Meg and Dia (www.meganddia.com): Maybe it’s the songwriting, maybe it’s their mere comportment, but this Utah fivesome (and MySpace darling) is the class of Warped. (Hurley.com Stage)
