Complex gets $90-million boost

Share

An anonymous donor has given $90 million to the New World Symphony toward the Frank Gehry-designed complex that the organization is planning to build in Miami Beach, Fla., home of the orchestra.

The gift ranks among the top donations to American musical institutions, a list that includes the $120-million gift to San Diego Symphony from communications technology mogul Irwin W. Jacobs in 2001.

Symphony President and Chief Executive Howard Herring called the donation, part of a $200-million capital campaign by the orchestra, an “extraordinary act of generosity.”

The donor committed to the gift two years ago but it had not been previously announced.
