1,700 civilians killed in last year
From Times Wire Reports
More than 1,700 civilians were killed and 2,000 wounded in Somalia in the last year, a local human rights organization said.
Elman Human Rights Group said it based its estimates on hospital reports and interviews with the wounded.
Much of the toll came from months of battles that left southern Somalia in the hands of a radical Islamic militia.
The government, backed by Ethiopian troops, toppled the Islamic militia in late December.
