Thousands flee heavy fighting

The number of refugees in eastern Sri Lanka surpassed 100,000, after heavy fighting in rebel-held parts of the island forced 15,000 civilians to flee in the last two days, the Red Cross said.
Battles have escalated between government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels in parts of the country’s rebel strongholds.
