Anti-solicitation law’s enforcement suspended
Lake Forest agreed Friday to stop enforcing an anti-solicitation ordinance until a judge rules on its constitutionality.
In court papers filed this month, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged that the city’s law to prohibit workers from seeking employment on the streets from potential employers in vehicles is unconstitutional.
Similar laws in Redondo Beach and Glendale have been struck down.
City Atty. Scott C. Smith has called the lawsuit’s allegations “baseless and wrong,” saying that Lake Forest officials are not enforcing the 1993 law. Workers, on the other hand, say that police surround the areas where they stand and make frequent, baseless arrests.
The case is to be heard by federal court Judge David O. Carter; no date has been set.
