Italian freed after release of 5 Taliban

Italy’s deputy foreign affairs minister confirmed that the Afghan government had released five Taliban prisoners to win the freedom of an Italian reporter who had been kidnapped in Helmand province.
Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who writes for La Repubblica newspaper, was freed Monday after two weeks in captivity.
In Washington, a U.S. official said diplomats had told Italian counterparts that the Taliban prisoners’ release could encourage further abductions.
