* Men’s 100 breaststroke: World-record holder Brendan Hansen didn’t even have to be prompted about his Japanese rival and Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima. “I’ll be right next to my buddy,” Hansen said of their lane assignments. Kitajima won their showdown at the 2004 Olympics, and Hansen’s friend and teammate Aaron Peirsol accused Kitajima of using an illegal dolphin kick, unleashing a mini-controversy in Athens.
