Paul E. Hadley, 92; longtime international relations professor and administrator at USC

Paul E. Hadley, 92, a USC administrator and international relations professor who founded the university’s College of Continuing Education and other programs, died April 10 at Windsor Manor care facility in Glendale, the university said.

Between 1959 and 1981, Hadley held a number of leadership roles at USC, including heading the comparative literature department and serving as vice president for academic affairs.

After joining USC in 1945, Hadley developed and broadened the school’s comparative literature studies.

He also created the school’s Latin American studies program.

After retiring in 1981, he returned to USC in 1990 to direct a faculty-community outreach program.

Born in South Ovid, Mich., Hadley earned a bachelor’s degree in German from Occidental College in 1934. He taught high school in El Monte and directed the Paraguayan-American Cultural Center at the U.S. Embassy in Asuncion, Paraguay, before joining USC.

He earned master’s and doctorate degrees in comparative literature from USC.
