5 ‘wild’ artists win Alpert awards

Five artists described as “wildly independent experimenters” were announced Sunday as winners of this year’s Alpert Award in the Arts.

The award bestows a $75,000 cash prize and a one-week teaching residency at CalArts in Valencia.

“As artists driven more by their individual visions and passions than by what is safe or trendy, they are truly challenging art, their own disciplines and society as a whole,” said musician and former record company executive Herb Alpert, who has sponsored the awards through a foundation in his name since 1994.

The winners are dancer-choreographer Jeanine Durning, composer-performer Mark Feldman, video-maker and filmmaker Jacqueline Goss, performance artist Cynthia Hopkins and visual artist Walid Raad.
